Established in 2016, Anna Mac is a thoughtfully designed collection of textiles, accessories and art, based in Suffolk, UK. Through combining simple shapes with exciting colour palettes, Anna creates a huge range of beautiful products for the home; her exploration of fluid movements and bold patterns is nothing short of exciting!
Today, we've put Anna in the hot seat to learn more about her creative process and unique range of prints.
-When did you realise you wanted to start your own business?
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be my own boss doing something I loved, but I didn't have the confidence for many years to make that leap. It's only recently in the past couple of years, that I decided to go for it and put those fears aside. Doing a job that wasn't fulfilling my creativity really made me reassess what I wanted to do and what made me happy.
-How would you describe your work?
Surface pattern design with an abstract, contemporary feel and a strong focus on the use of colour combinations.
-How do you approach the design process; what is your starting point?
For me, it is always mindlessly experimenting with colour combinations and shapes, hitting on an element or section that I like and developing it further. I've found that my best way to start something new is to be completely free and without set intentions. Often an idea will develop (and sometimes it won't!) naturally without putting too much pressure on myself. Listening to podcasts really helps me too, as it distracts my conscious mind, so my unconscious mind is free to create.
-Do you have a particular designer or artist who inspires you?
I have always been a Matisse fan but when I saw his 'Cut out' exhibition at the Tate Modern a few years ago, I was hugely inspired by his ability to create beautiful bold work, through colour and simple shapes. I think seeing his work in real life gave me the confidence to do what I like in my own work. I'd always felt like everything had to have immense detail and complex design, whereas what I really love is very simplistic.
-Who would be your dream collaboration?
I love Slowdown Studio and it would be great to see one of my designs as a woven blanket one day! I'd also love to collaborate with a brand like Aesop or Illamasqua and design some packaging with them.
-What should we look out for over the next 6 months?
I am excited to develop my paintings and exhibit them; I really love balancing out my textile work with my art and feel they work well collectively. With my textiles, I really aim to keep developing fresh new designs and producing pieces that people really connect with. I love that feeling of seeing all the details come together into a beautiful final product!
